Played hookey today

Dan stayed home from work and my MIL picked up the boys from school and took them for the afternoon. We had incredible dumplings at Din Tai Fung Dumpling House, then zipped off to watch Serenity in one of the few places where it's still showing. Found out tickets are only $5 all day on Wednesday and had a completely empty theater all to ourselves to boot. Felt like having our own private viewing room to cozy up together in. Great movie, by the way. Then we walked through the mall and window shopped for a bit, holding hands and laughing at displays together.

Sometimes all I need in the world is a few hours with my best friend. I love playing hookey.

  2. They have exactly *one* location in the US - luckily a half hour's drive from me :-) I've heard the food isn't quite as good as the Taipei location since the pork and other ingredients aren't quite the same, but the people who make the dumplings train in Taipei for 6 months before coming here. The food is amazing.

Oh that sounds like it was a WONDERFUL day :) I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed Serenity; I'm looking forward to seeing it myself, though I expect that'll have to wait until the DVD comes out :)

Dumplings (drool...) I don't suppose you'd care to send an order back east, eh? Didn't think so :)

Love your blog - I just found it and have been reading all of the archives. Your culinary adventures are inspiring-- and in one post you say you feed everyone on $75/ a week -- and I just keep trying to figure out how! Any insight would be appreciated!

  5. Ingrid, I'd be happy to share more this weekend when I do my weekly shopping. Staying close to that budget has my own personal challenge and is something I'm really proud of. It means we can do far more together as a family than we'd be able to otherwise and helps allow me to be home right now.

Great. I stay home with my almost-2-year-old and I'm embarrassed to say we struggle to keep the food budget under $150 a week! We're kind of foodies, but I can see that you don't suffer for wonderful stuff to eat. I look forward to hearing more.
